Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity PAR-21-271 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The purpose of the MOSAIC Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00) program is to support a cohort of early career, independent investigators from diverse backgrounds conducting research in NIH mission areas. The long-term goal of this program is to enhance diversity in the basic biomedical sciences research workforce. The MOSAIC K99/R00 program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds (e.g., see NIHs Interest in Diversity) from their mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions at research-intensive institutions. The MOSAIC K99/R00 program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition to help awardees launch competitive, independent research careers. Additionally, MOSAIC K99/R00 scholars will be part of organized scientific cohorts that will be expected to participate in mentoring, networking, and professional development activities coordinated by MOSAIC Institutionally-Focused Research Education Award to Promote Diversity (UE5) grantees.

Funding Opportunity PAR-21-277 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The NIH Research Education Program (UE5) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of the MOSAIC UE5 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, for example those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development and Mentoring Activities. Applications are encouraged from organizations of biomedical researchers (e.g., scientific societies) with a membership of scientists conducting research within the mission of NIH, experience serving as a centralized entity to enhance scientific communication and networking among scientists conducting research, an established record of providing professional development and networking activities for the next generation of biomedical researchers, and a demonstrated commitment to enhancing the diversity of the biomedical research workforce. The program provides support for well-designed courses for skills development and mentoring activities to prepare MOSAIC K99/R00 grantees to transition into, succeed, and advance in independent faculty careers at research-intensive institutions.

Limited Competition: Genome Sequencing Center for the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity RFA-RM-21-013 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to renew the Genome Sequencing Center(s) for the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program to support rapid generation of high quality sequence and variant data (whole genome, RNA, and long-read), genome-wide methylation profiling, and chromatin accessibility data from a large number of human specimens representing two types of pediatric conditions - childhood cancers and structural birth defects. All data generated under this FOA will be re-processed and harmonized by the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Data Resource Center (Kids First DRC), which is also charged with maintaining a public-facing, cloud-based resource that enables researchers to search, access, aggregate, analyze, and share annotated genomic sequences, genomic variants, epigenomic, transcriptomic, and phenotypic datasets. Together these resources promote comprehensive and cross-cutting research and collaboration within the pediatric research community.

Limited Competition for the Continuation of Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) Study Research Center (Collaborative U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity RFA-DK-21-503 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to continue to follow the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) cohort through a collaborative cooperative agreement. EDIC is an observational study that was launched at the completion of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) trial. The DCCT showed that intensive therapy significantly reduced the risk of diabetes complications compared to conventional therapy. At DCCT completion, all cohort members were taught intensive diabetes therapy. In 1994, EDIC was launched to: (1) evaluate the long-term effects of DCCT intensive therapy, (2) describe the long-term effects of glycemia and other risk factors on diabetes complications, and (3) characterize type1 diabetes complicationsby supporting collaborative research to utilize the EDIC cohort as well as its data set and biologic/genetic samples. To date, EDIC has: (1) demonstrated a continued benefit of intensive therapy on the development and progression of diabetes complications, and (2) characterized the development and progression of diabetes complications. The primary purpose of this FOA is to support the EDIC Research Center to continue follow-up of the EDIC cohort to study the development of complications and the longer term course of type 1 diabetes in a well characterized type 1 diabetes population, including but not limited to severe microvascular disease (blindness, kidney failure, amputation),cardiovascular disease, liver disease, sleep disorders and mortality. The EDIC Research Center will manage and support EDIC Clinical Centers, which are responsible for the conduct of all EDIC core activities as described in the protocol and Manual of Operations and as required by the local and central Institutional Review Boards.
