NIDA Research Education Program for Clinical Researchers and Clinicians (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity PAR-19-258 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIDA R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nations biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. This FOA is intended to support research education activities that enhance the knowledge of substance use and substance use disorder research. The program is intended for those in clinically focused careers and/or those training for careers as clinicians/health service providers, clinical researchers, or optimally a combination of the two. This mechanism may not be used to support non-research-related clinical training.

NIDA Research Center of Excellence Grant Program (P50 Clinical Trial Optional)
Funding Opportunity PAR-19-259 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for research Centers that (1) conduct drug abuse and addiction research in any area of NIDAs mission, (2) have outstanding innovative science, (3) are multidisciplinary, thematically integrated, synergistic, and (4) serve as national resource(s) to provide educational and outreach activities to drug abuse research communities, educational organizations, the general public, and policy makers in the NIDA research fields. It is expected that a Center will transform knowledge in the sciences it is studying. Incremental work should not be the focus of Center activities; rather, new and creative directions are required. The P50 Center of Excellence is expected to foster the career development and mentoring of new investigators who would be given meaningful roles to play in the Center projects. A goal of this program is to create NIDA Centers that are national community resources for furthering drug abuse research by sharing their findings, their data, and their resources as appropriate for researchers to use and build upon and to advance research in this field.

HEAL Initiative: Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network - Specialized Clinical Centers (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity RFA-NS-19-036 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. (RFA-NS-19-025 is being reissued to accommodate an additional receipt date). The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for the Specialized Clinical Centers (hubs) of the Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net). EPPIC-Net will serve as the cornerstone of the NIHs Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative. EPPIC-Net will provide a robust and readily accessible infrastructure for carrying out in depth phenotyping and biomarker studies in patients with specific pain conditions, and the rapid design and performance of high-quality Phase 2 clinical trials to test promising novel therapeutics for pain from partners in academia or industry. Studies will bring intense focus to patients with well-defined pain conditions and high unmet therapeutic needs. EPPIC-Net will consist of one Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and approximately 10 specialized clinical centers (hubs). The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for the hubs within EPPIC-Net. A hub will typically be a regional medical center that will actively enroll subjects into clinical trials and studies performed in EPPIC-Net. Each hub should have ready access to patient populations with specific pain conditions and have expertise in characterization of that pain condition. A hub will additionally provide scientific leadership and administrative oversight to its multiple (2-10) satellite sites (spokes). This FOA solicits applications EPPIC-Net Specialized Clinical Centers. Separate FOAs have been issued to solicit applications for the Clinical Coordinating Center (RFA-NS-18-036) and Data Coordinating Center (RFA-NS-18-035). Clinical trials conducted through EPPIC-Net may come from a variety of sources including the HEAL Partnership, as described above, or from separate NIH funding announcements.

Limited Competition: Interdisciplinary Complementary and Integrative Health Clinical Research Training (T90/R90 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity RFA-AT-19-010 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) seeks to support interdisciplinary clinical research training to improve the capacity of the integrative health field to carry out rigorous research. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits renewal applications to support training partnerships between institutions with research intensive environments (e.g., institutions with a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) or T32 programs) and institutions focused on clinical training of practitioners in complementary modalities and disciplines that have faculty with substantial interest in rigorous clinical research. The program will support mentored research training with hands-on mentored experiences in clinical research within NCCIH's Strategic Plan and didactic activities in clinical research methodology and integrative health. The funded training partnership is expected to generate a cadre of clinician scientists who participate in multi-disciplinary teams engaged in complementary and integrative health research. This FOA does not allow appointed T90 Trainees or R90 Participants to lead an independent clinical trial but does allow them to obtain research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.

Limited Competition: Small Grant Program for NIAMS K08 and K23 Recipients (R03)
Funding Opportunity PAR-19-257 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) announces a program that provides NIAMS-supported K08 and K23 recipients the opportunity to apply for Small Grant (R03) support at some point during the second to fourth year of their K award. Through this FOA, the NIAMS is seeking to enhance the capability of its clinical scientists to conduct research as they complete their transition to fully independent investigator status. The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects, including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. The R03 is, therefore, intended to support research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources and that provide preliminary data to support a subsequent R01, or equivalent, application. Clinical trials of any phase will not be supported by this FOA.
